What our clients say

Miracle worker! Ruth made an already daunting process of proposing very stress free and easy. When I first met Ruth, I was clueless about rings and diamonds, and didn’t know where to start. She took the time to educate me on the subject and guided me through the process. During the final stages, Ruth took my ramblings and turned it into a piece of art; she created exactly what I wanted and I have a very happy fiancé.

It was a fantastic service from start to finish, and I couldn’t be happier with the ring.

Frequently Asked

Can my existing ring be adapted, or do I need a completely new ring?
Can my existing ring be adapted, or do I need a completely new ring?

Most of our solutions can either produce brand new rings, or modify your existing ring — Speed Bumps and Spring Clips are applied without major rebuilding, while a Shaped Ring reshapes the existing band. For the hinged designs (Expanding Ring and CliQ), the shank is replaced almost entirely, so while stones and design details can often be retained, it's a more significant remodel. We offer a fully bespoke new-ring design service if you're starting from scratch, depending on your style, and what works best for your knuckle and finger.

How much does it cost to adapt a ring for a larger knuckle?

Costs start from £250 for Speed Bumps and rise depending on the solution and metal, up to £1,500+ for a bespoke CliQ hinged ring. Each solution page has full pricing detail, including additional costs for retrofitting existing stone settings where relevant. We will advise according to your individual needs.

How do I know which solution is right for me?
How do I know which solution is right for me?

When you book an appointment for a finger size you will be guided through what works best for your needs as we'll measure your knuckle and finger and discuss your lifestyle. It largely depends on the difference between your knuckle and finger size but we also advise depending on how you want to wear the ring. As a general guide: up to 2 UK sizes suits Speed Bumps, from 2 sizes to 3 (particularly for stone settings) suits Spring Clips, 1–3 sizes suits a Shaped Ring, and larger differences of up to around 5 UK sizes are best served by an Expanding Hinged Ring. The CliQ design, which opens fully isn't limited by size difference at all.

What solutions does Heirloom London offer for rings that don't fit over large knuckles?
What solutions does Heirloom London offer for rings that don't fit over large knuckles?

We offer five approaches depending on your size difference and preferences: Speed Bumps (small internal ridges, from £250), Spring Clips (flexible sides in the ring from £500), a Shaped Ring with a trapezoid or square shank (from £950), an Expanding Hinged Ring (opens over finger and clicks into place from £1,300), and the CliQ by Superfit hinged ring that opens a full 180° (from £1,500). Each suits a different size gap and level of adjustment as well as different price points.

Why do rings get stuck at my knuckle or spin around on my finger?
Why do rings get stuck at my knuckle or spin around on my finger?

This usually comes down to a size difference between your knuckle and the base of your finger — often caused by arthritis, injury, weight change, or simply the shape of your hand. In these cases, ring sized to fit comfortably at the base of your finger are be too small to pass over a larger knuckle. But if the ring size clears the knuckle, it is too big on the finger, so it may spin or slide once it's on. Heirloom London offer several ways to solve this, depending the size difference between knuckle and finger that needs to be addressed.

When Do You Charge A £300 Retainer?
When Do You Charge A £300 Retainer?

We ask our client for a retainer when we start working on design concepts and production work where we need higher quality renderings, or 3D models. The first discussion and subsequent correspondence is generally free of charge.

Why is it more expensive to remodel my ring than it would to buy a new one?
Why is it more expensive to remodel my ring than it would to buy a new one?

We will advise on costs, especially if we feel it is a lot more than just buying a new ring design that is bespoke to your knuckle requirements. If you have a large difference between the size of your knuckle and your finger, as you already know, the standard ring is not going to work on it, as it either is going to be too tight to take off, or roll around the finger when it is worn.  We offer as many different options as we can for clients, which are all variations on the traditional ring, but are specialist designs to work over your knuckle.  In addition, if we are retrofitting your beloved stone setting into the shaped ring, this requires more time and skill to make than a standard ring because we have to ensure everything is transferred correctly, and it looks the same (unless you have specified otherwise).  With the hinged rings, a lot of engineering has gone into these before they even reach us, and they have to be robust for everyday wear. However, the end result will feel like the first time you wore your ring, it's very exciting!

Can I trust your workshop with my jewellery?
Can I trust your workshop with my jewellery?

As per our terms, your jewellery is fully covered while it is in our care which definitely includes the workshop. We've known our goldsmiths a long time and our business is all about trust. The two main workshops are run by highly skilled people who have been in the industry for several decades. They make jewellery for a lot prestigious clients, and are called on for specialist repairs from all over the UK and Europe. Our prices in part reflect that these men and women are paid in recognition of their skills and respect for fine jewellery craftsmanship and the quality of workmanship they set standard by.

What if something goes wrong when you have my jewellery in your possession?
What if something goes wrong when you have my jewellery in your possession?

While this hasn't happened, we never say never. With old jewellery, there are always risks associated with working on it, as we don’t know what conditions it has been worn under or the quality of the materials or who made it. While we offer no guarantees, we work very hard to avoid unexpected breakages and damage (see our FAQ on jewellery insurance), from the moment we take your jewellery in for appraisal we are looking for potential issues before we start any work. We test gemstones to ensure that they are genuine, inspect them under magnification and look at metal finesses, as well as searching for any cracks or areas of weakness.  We notify you of any found issues and will require your permission to start work on the piece if there are risks involved. If you choose not to go ahead with a project, we return your pieces in the condition you handed them over to us, simple as that.

Is my jewellery Insured while it is with Heirloom London?
Is my jewellery Insured while it is with Heirloom London?

Your jewellery is fully covered for the duration of the time it is with us. We have very experienced goldsmiths, and if they are concerned about any part of the structure, we notify clients before any work is carried out, and if we genuinely believe that there is a risk of breakage (for example with a stone) we will discuss other options with yourself. We will not accept responsibility for pre-existing conditions that we have notified you of, and we also don’t accept liability for un-setting melee that is over 2 years old (although for these stones, they cost very little to replace).

For single gemstones with a value over £45,000 we either arrange insurance for the client (charged at cost) or request clients arrange their own insurance.
