What does a hinged ring cost?
It all depends on five things;
- Solution preference
- Metal Choice
- Finger Size
- Band Width / Depth
- Work required
Option 5 may not be an issue, if it is just a plain wedding ring you are after. However, if you are looking at retrofitting old into new, or adding other details, it's additional workshop time.
We work with two types of hinged ring, CliQ which offers a full 180° opening using stylus, and Finger Mate which offers a 45° opening which requires no tools.
Summary of CliQ
- Widths from 2.7mm to 12mm
- Starting depth 2mm - medium 2.2mm, deepest 2.5mm (average wedding ring shank depth is 1.8mm, heavyweight is 2.3mm)
- Available in 14kt gold, 18kt gold and platinum
- Full design service, so will make practically any viable ring design with hinge.
- Advantages : The Porsche of hinged rings. Great option for very large knuckles and small fingers. Very sleek hinge and closing system. Will work over any knuckle. Solid ring.
- Disadvantages : Expensive in comparison to a normal ring because of metal and workmanship. Needs stylus, pen or similar to get the ring on and off. Requires servicing every 18 months to two years. Rings are deep. Problems with shank, will need to be sent to USA if not serviceable in workshop.
Summary of Finger Mate
- Widths from 2mm to 7.5mm
- One depth of 2mm
- Available in 14kt gold and platinum (the gold finesse is because 18 karat gold is too flexible and the shape doesn't hold)
- Can open ring to 3 or 4 sizes meaning that it will travel over most knuckles.
- Rings made to be worked through by master goldsmiths.
- Advantages : The Mercedes of hinged rings. Because of the shape when open, sizing is actually slightly larger than advertised (i.e. opening 3 sizes will actually travel over 4 sizes). Rings come on and off without tool. All maintenance can be carried out in UK.
- Disadvantages : Three hinge intersections on ring. For some fingers, knuckle to phaluynx size difference too much. Not available in 18 karat. Hinge section is tube, if damaged will impact opening mechanism.
